I learnt how to do woodcut at the Codigo Tonal studio/ gallery in Oaxaca.
It was apparently a Japanese print artist who settled in Oaxaca who started teaching at the art school and a whole Oaxaca woodcut tradition as developed since. It was a beautiful craft to learn, although I found it tricky to keep to the very exact, methodical way of imagine making and then cutting the wood. My process was much more sketchy loose and winging it.

When in Oaxaca I spend a lot of time out in the countryside and drawing in situ in remote landscapes as well as the city. In early March it rarely rains but when it does it is torrential and powerful and it feels so exciting to be out dancing under the leaves.

So sculptural and fun, they create the most beautiful sillouettes on the skyline.

This print is of the Mixteca region of Oaxaca state, a stunning agave studded landscape lying languidly beneath the burning midday sun. There is something jewel-like about these majestic plants and they are of endless fascination to me.

When carving it my landlady said she loved that I was carving a heart, but I told her it was a plant. She then laughed and said that actually it was called a heart plant sometimes too - no wonder really!

This print was hand carved and printed in Oaxaca city, Mexico in 2018. It is part of a series of prints I did whilst on residency at Convivio, an arts and events spaces in the centre of town.
When in Oaxaca I spend a lot of time out in the countryside and drawing in situ in remote landscapes. This print is of one of my favourite plants - the Nopal cactus. It is so beautiful in form and I love it as a food. It is in fact a super food, you can eat the deliciout fruit called Tuna (Prickly pear) and you can eat the leaves - delicious in a taco!
The cochineal insect famously used to create pigment also feeds off it.
Anytime I see this plant i feel so joyful, they are playful and fun in their strange sculptural forms!

This print was hand carved and printed in Oaxaca city, Mexico in 2017. It is part of a series of prints I did whilst on residency at Convivio, an arts and events spaces in the centre of town.
Over 7 weeks I explored Oaxaca state as well as the city. What is fascinating about this area is the varied geography and therefore wide range of climates within easy reach. This is a self portrait of the time i spent there, exploring my spirituality through interacting with the rich and vibrant culture and welcoming communities of this beautiful part of Mexico.
Everything here feels heightened, positive as well as negative energies rise quickly her. It is a very powerful place, and often feels like i am viewing the world through saturated colours, accentuated light and dark - contrast. Nothing is subtle or pallid here.
This piece took a month to carve and by the end of it I had lost the feeling in my fingers on my right hand. Carving is such a beautiful process, a real meditation as well as a direct dialogue with the wood. You have a plan, a composition in your mind, and then the wood has another idea. The knots and grain dictate and force you to reconsider and shift your perspective.

I made this woodcut after a month in Oaxaca, having had time to get inspired and drawn to all the beautiful plant forms. Agaves were by far the most intriguing of all.
Their architectural shape, and often size is so majestic and magical and I love that you can build with the bres, make textiles, eat them and drink them as mezcal!

Nopal cacti are one of my favourite plants. They make delicious veggie taco llings, they are great for your health, they are the home to the cochineal bug that makes beautiful pigment, and most of all they are comical and joyous in their form.
