An excruciatingly terrible freelance design contract sends me into a downward spiral of despair. This job is soul destroying, completely against my values, zero creativity and in a grim characterless office full of unfriendly people. I walk the streets of soho crying every lunchtime until I happen across soho square and then everything changes. A row of banana plants in the central flowerbed seem to be waving cheerfully and beckoning me over. Their voluptuous curved forms are so utterly full of life and love and cheekiness and fill me with so much joy and gratitude.

I am restored! 

Where is your favourite swimming spot in London?

Swimming is essential to my wellbeing. My main outdoor swimming spots in the capital are: The ladies pond in hampstead heath, the London Fields Lido and the Serpentine Lido. I have also recently discovered the West Reservoir in North London too which is wonderful!

 The ladies pond on hampstead heath is a sacred little spot for me. It has seen me in many moods, has healed many wounds.

I once heard a couple of ladies in the changing room talking after a winter dip, saying how much more pressure on the mental heath services of the NHS there would be in the borough if the ponds didn't exist. And I completely agree.

When I am in a bit of a slump or feel like I am heading in a downward spiral, I prescribe myself a swim a day in the ponds to sort myself out. It works everytime.

Project Awesome commissioned Anne-Laure to Draw Primrose Hill because we think it’s the most beautiful place in London at 6.30am. Sometimes the sunrise is so beautiful you totally forget the pain in your legs as we run hill reps. Anne-Laure’s use of colour meant there wa only one person who could do this picture justice.

Location: Greenwich Observatory

This is going to sound really cliche, but because this view is what makes me feel like this little part of the world is where I belong - I feel rooted here. Having grown up in Kent, I moved to south west London when I started work where I met my partner, he and I eventually moved to Greenwich together as our first home. Now we live up the hill on the other side of the Heath but we still walk through the park almost every weekend without exception - it is my favourite place in London and I feel quite lucky to have found a place in such a big city that is mine and my home. The view over the rest of London from the Observatory always makes me feel this settled kind of happy feeling. I love views over big cities anyway, but there is something quite calming about being able to look out at a miniature Shard and St Pauls and Canary Wharf from the safety of a place away from the hustle and bustle and stress of working life in the busy streets of London.

Location: The River Lea at 3 Mills Studios, Three Mill Lane, London, E3 3DU

For many years the idea of living on a boat has appealed and when I moved to London I very nearly rented one at this location. I think it’s a lovely stretch of waterway for several reasons. The greenery, the peacefulness (usually ) and the local history and of course the runners and wanders that it attracts. I’m very lucky to now be living close by, although unfortunately not on the water.

We live here and want to preserve the memory of the beautiful hidden spot of London - ex Norway Dock, now redeveloped as a lake with herons and swans surrounded by houses along Plover Way. I bet that this is one of the most beautiful examples of co-existence of the city and wild life within Zone 2.

My favourite place to kayak is the tidal section between the Westminster boating base (at Pimlico) and Putney. I like the view from the surface of the river - on a Sunday morning it is often pretty quiet.  I particularly loved a very pea soupy day when we had to start the journey with torches on the kayaks-you don’t actually realise how foggy it is until you are near the river and there are no points of reference and so you literally can’t see anything. As the fog rose, you could start to make out the grey herons and cormorants flying above the water.  I’m also obsessed with houseboats and the idea of living a very different lifestyle just meters away from the glass box riverside flats.  There are some wonderfully fancy houseboats around Chelsea reach which are either bobbing around or wallowing in mud depending on the tide.

I initially launched this Lebanese series for the explosion of August 2020 that damaged up to 8000 buildings in Beirut, 640 of those deemed to be of architectural heritage. Now a new tragedy is unfolding in Lebanon, the latest illegal Israeli invasion (Sept 2024) and I need your help in supporting an already vulnerable community of women refugees in Beirut.

Towards the end of our Shifting Sands adventure in 2014 we spent two weeks in Lebanon where I completed 14 Drawings. This is a drawing of one of the few remaining architectural gems of old Beirut. Many of these villas are being demolished to be replaced by lucrative sky rise apartment blocks. There is no official town planning regulation in the city hence these buildings not being protected.

This is a digital scan of an original sketchbook sketch by me in Lebanon in 2014 using a Moleskine book and Platinum Carbon Fountain pen with permanent ink.

The street where our centre is located was directly hit. Thankfully all our community are as yet unharmed, but as our embroidery artisan Nadia says: ‘We are very terrified. Where could we flee to? We go to sleep thinking this night would be our last. What terrifies me the most is the safety of my children. They are vey small. We fled the war in Syria and now we are living the same horror.’

We have set up an urgent crowdfunder and 100% raised goes directly to the women and community affected.

Description: Basterma Bedo has been around since 1960 and has achieved cult status in the capital. It is a specialist in Soujouk, Makanek, Basterma, Roast Beef, Merguez.
Special Sandwiches: Soujouk Burger, Soujouk Fajita, Merguez.
We went one day to visit Bourj Hammound and found a lovely cafe on a street corner where I found a good view to draw from - little did we know this was a famous establishment until I showed the drawing to a Lebanese friend!

Description: Bsharri is the town of the only remaining and preserved original Cedars of God (Cedrus libani), and is the birthplace of the famous poet, painter and sculptor Khalil Gibran who now has a museum in the town to honour him. Moreover, Bsharri is home to the oldest skiing area, the Cedars Ski Resort, and to Lebanon’s first ski lift, built in 1953.

Description: Founded in 1866, the American University of Beirut is in the Hamra district. We went for a later afternoon walk one very hot day to get a break from our apartment and trip planning and wandered through the AUB campus. It was a beautiful quiet place to sit and draw for a couple of hours, overlooking the sea.

Description: Coop D’etat was on the rooftop at Saifi Urban Gardens, overlooking the port. It was one of Beirut’s many alternative, relaxed al fresco haunts that has been destroyed by the blast in 2020. Luckily all the staff of Café Em Nazih, Coop 'd’etat and Saifi Urban Gardens are safe, even though their place of work is gone.

Title: Dove Rock - Raouche

Description: Off the coast of Raouché, there is a natural landmark called the Pigeons' Rock (also known as the Rock of Raouché). Located at Beirut's westernmost tip, the two huge rock formations, which stand like gigantic sentinels, are a popular destination for locals and visitors alike.

Raouché also is claimed to be the remains of a sea monster the Greek hero Perseus killed to save Andromeda. The stone is rock as Perseus used Medusas head on the monster to turn it into stone.

In the past few days, indiscriminate Israeli bombing across Lebanon has forced nearly all the 60 refugee families that Oshana supports to leave their homes again. Last night many slept on the seafront or in stadiums in search of somewhere safe.

The street where our centre is located was directly hit. Thankfully all our community are as yet unharmed, but as our embroidery artisan Nadia says: ‘We are very terrified. Where could we flee to? We go to sleep thinking this night would be our last. What terrifies me the most is the safety of my children. They are vey small. We fled the war in Syria and now we are living the same horror.’

We have set up an urgent crowdfunder and 100% raised goes directly to the women and community affected.

This was a view from a cafe in the Hamra district of Beirut where we were drinking yet another coffee on our Shifting Sands trip in 2014. I love drawing random streets and recording the variety of shops and buildings - the everyday. What struck us was the array of knitted sculptures formed of electricity cables that are often dangling like unfinished crochet projects in front of the patchwork of facades.

I initially launched this Lebanese series for the explosion of August 2020 that damaged up to 8000 buildings in Beirut, 640 of those deemed to be of architectural heritage. Now a new tragedy is unfolding in Lebanon, the latest illegal Israeli invasion (Sept 2024) and I need your help in supporting an already vulnerable community of women refugees in Beirut.

Description: Al Rawda cafe is particularly memorable for its sea-front location, it has been a classic retro haunt since it was built in 1930. Rawda overlooks the Raoucheh rock from the northern point. A lush year round garden is kept up in the cafe’s expansive, retro grounds. Lounging with a book (or drawing!) at Rawda, one has the sense to have been transported back to a calmer, more simple time in Beirut’s history.

Description: Originally a part of Souk el Tayeb, an organisation that promotes Lebanon's independent farmers and producers, Tawlet has evolved into a restaurant in itself. The concept is in the same spirit as the Souk. There is no menu: just a daily smorgasbord of traditional Lebanese dishes prepared by farmers from all over the country, who rotate throughout the week. There's only one option: an all-you-can-eat buffet - it will not disappoint!

In Beirut, the club hosts over 1,000 clubbers weekly under its unique whale structure nicknamed “the beast”. We went there for an evening of open air cinema before the real party began.

Description: After a pretty sever full break failure on a mountain pass on the way to Tripoli, we ended up having to get towed down to the port to find a mechanic who had the right spare parts for us to do a full fix. It took more time than we expected and so had a pleasant couple of days in Tripoli spent mainly in the mechanics district but with a little time to explore the city and its beaches.

Description: Zahlé was the beautiful town we drove to after our week in Beirut. It was a charming placed, and in the evening we ambled along to one of the many restaurants along the cool riverside. I love how in Lebanon you get presented with a plate of vegetables and herbs as a starter/ amuse bouche. It’s so delicious and healthy! And for pudding an whole bowl of different fruits to choose from!
