London is the longest I have ever lived anywhere, getting to know it well by the miles and miles I cycled on my trusted Brompton day in day out on my commute and for leisure. I loved knowing the quickest way to get places, the side streets and short cuts. I find it fascinating imagining the millions of lives being lived side by side, sometime overlapping, others existing in totally different worlds only meters apart from each other.

in 2015 I completed a series of drawings based on my connection with water in London and it's vital role in keeping me sane and able to live in a frenetic city.
Swimming is essential to my wellbeing. My main outdoor swimming spots in the capital are: The ladies pond in hampstead heath, the London Fields Lido and the Serpentine Lido. I have also recently discovered the West Reservoir in North London too which is wonderful!
There is nothing more cleansing than a dip in the open air, a communing with nature, a little hello to the ducks, or a stroking of your arm by a passing leaf.

Project Awesome commissioned Anne-Laure to Draw Primrose Hill because we think it’s the most beautiful place in London at 6.30am. Sometimes the sunrise is so beautiful you totally forget the pain in your legs as we run hill reps. Anne-Laure’s use of colour meant there wa only one person who could do this picture justice.

This is going to sound really cliche, but because this view is what makes me feel like this little part of the world is where I belong - I feel rooted here. Having grown up in Kent, I moved to south west London when I started work where I met my partner, he and I eventually moved to Greenwich together as our first home. Now we live up the hill on the other side of the Heath but we still walk through the park almost every weekend without exception - it is my favourite place in London and I feel quite lucky to have found a place in such a big city that is mine and my home. The view over the rest of London from the Observatory always makes me feel this settled kind of happy feeling. I love views over big cities anyway, but there is something quite calming about being able to look out at a miniature Shard and St Pauls and Canary Wharf from the safety of a place away from the hustle and bustle and stress of working life in the busy streets of London.

For many years the idea of living on a boat has appealed and when I moved to London I very nearly rented one at this location. I think it’s a lovely stretch of waterway for several reasons. The greenery, the peacefulness (usually ) and the local history and of course the runners and wanders that it attracts. I’m very lucky to now be living close by, although unfortunately not on the water.

We live here and want to preserve the memory of the beautiful hidden spot of London - ex Norway Dock, now redeveloped as a lake with herons and swans surrounded by houses along Plover Way. I bet that this is one of the most beautiful examples of co-existence of the city and wild life within Zone 2.

My favourite place to kayak is the tidal section between the Westminster boating base (at Pimlico) and Putney. I like the view from the surface of the river - on a Sunday morning it is often pretty quiet. I particularly loved a very pea soupy day when we had to start the journey with torches on the kayaks-you don’t actually realise how foggy it is until you are near the river and there are no points of reference and so you literally can’t see anything. As the fog rose, you could start to make out the grey herons and cormorants flying above the water. I’m also obsessed with houseboats and the idea of living a very different lifestyle just meters away from the glass box riverside flats. There are some wonderfully fancy houseboats around Chelsea reach which are either bobbing around or wallowing in mud depending on the tide.

Having spent years living in one of the greatest cities of the world, I’ve come to the realisation that I hardly know it - or at least that I have a very narrow vision of the city. In my previous existence in the 9-5 (or 9-9) work life, I rarely strayed from my commute during the week, with only the weekends to venture further afield and explore.
Most of us exist in London at some point or other in this way - always rushing to get from one place to the next in the most time efficient way.
We never look up.
Urban Artventuring is an experimental project in re-exploring a city through the eyes of the people who inhabit it, with the aim of overlaying human stories onto the built environment.
This is about visually representing people, stories and places.

An excruciatingly terrible freelance design contract sends me into a downward spiral of despair. This job is soul destroying, completely against my values, zero creativity and in a grim characterless office full of unfriendly people. I walk the streets of soho crying every lunchtime until I happen across soho square and then everything changes. A row of banana plants in the central flowerbed seem to be waving cheerfully and beckoning me over. Their voluptuous curved forms are so utterly full of life and love and cheekiness and fill me with so much joy and gratitude.
I am restored!
