Agaves are the diamonds in the Mexican landscape, like the cactus I love their architectural structure. They are so elegant and flamboyant, especially the giant Tepextate variety that can take up to 30 years to mature. It’s a plant that is so integral to Oaxacan culture originally used in so many different ways and considered a gift from the gods! Its fibres were used as a building material, to make yarn, their leaves food and when distilled for the famous Tequila and Mezcal spirits.

This print was hand carved and printed in Oaxaca city, Mexico in 2018. It is part of a series of prints I did whilst on residency at Convivio, an arts and events spaces in the centre of town.
When in Oaxaca I spend a lot of time out in the countryside and drawing in situ in remote landscapes. This print is of the Mixteca region of Oaxaca state, a stunning agave studded landscape lying languidly beneath the burning midday sun. There is something jewel-like about these majestic plants and they are of endless fascination to me.

This print is part of a collection of three agave plants, (Espadín, Tobala and Tepextate) and was inspired by the breadth of flavours that each different agave variety can create when making Mezcal.
Made in 2017 when I was on an artist residency with the First Food Residency in Oaxaca.
