Sketches and works in progress

Whilst living in Oaxaca for 3 months I had the privilege to travel around in stunning and varied rural landscapes of the region. We met local mezcaleros producing artisanal and unique mezcal. I adore the Maguey (agave) plant - to me they look like jewels studded in the landscape. So majestic and grand, no wonder they hold a sacred place in Mexican culture.

There is currently a boom in the mezcal industry, and some are worried that due to new legislations and government controls, things might go the way that tequila did in the 1980’s. Turning an incredibly complex and beautiful process, often handed down for generations within a family, into a more mechanised, larger scale homogenous business.

To find out more take a look at the following charities, companies and organisations that are helping producers keep their local customs and extensive knowledge. If you haven’t explored the world of mezcal yet, you are in for a treat!
